The film that I want to talk about this week, is the most important film of all times for me, Maysles Brothers' documentary 'Grey Gardens'. In fact the film is came into being with a coincidence, after J.F. Kennedy's assassination, Maysles Brothers were asked by Jacqueline Kennedy and her sister Lee to make a film about the Bouvier family (Jacqueline Kennedy's maiden name).  The big scandal of Jacqueline's aunt Edie Bouvier and her daughter who lives in a decaying mansion to be trow out to the street is discovered at that time. Jacqueline provided the funds for the renewal of the house and she herself went to Grey Gardens to help with the cleaning. And of course, Maysles Brothers, who probably faced the most eccentric and interesting characters they were ever going to face, didn't miss this opportunity. The Jacqueline Kennedy documentary got canceled and they moved into the trash house and 'Grey Gardens', the most talked about in the world, got shot.

I must say here that the Maysles Brothers are always lucky like that. Before Grey Gardens, they planned to shoot a Rolling Stone's tour in the 1970. During this tour, in a free concert in Altmont, a kind of an uproar started and a person was stabbed and killed. And here they were the Maysles Brothers shooting the scene with 16 cameras! So, on the contrary of how unlucky I am when shooting my documentaries, they were always on the good side with luck. I kinda hate them a little bit for that.

1923'de aile New York'a yakınlığıyla bilinen sosyetiklerin tatil yöresi East Hampston'daki Grey Gardens'a (Boz Bahçeler) taşınıyorlar.

But who are these "Big" and "Little" Edie? "Big" Edie, Edith Ewin Bouvier Beale is Jacqueline Kennedy's aunt and the daughter of a rich socialite family. She was born in 1895 and was an amateur singer. In 1917, she married a lawyer from his father's firm Phelean Beale. Beside "Little" Edie who was born at the same year, she also had two sons. In 1923, the family moved to the "Grey Gardens" a big mansion in a huge estate in East Hampton. In 1931, Phelean left the house and Edie was left only with the Grey Gardens and child support. The couple finally got divorced in 1946 via a letter from Phelean in Mexico. According to the film, the father got re-married in Mexico. When "Big" Edie decided to go dressed as an opera singer to his son's wedding, her father cut her off his will which augmented her money issues.

"Little" Edie, who was very beautiful and modeled for some small shows in her youth lived in New York from 1947 to 1952 in order to find a suitable husband. Because of her love affair with a married man (according to "Little" Edie, his lover would make her a famous star), the family forced her to return to the Grey Gardens, which started what she calls herself a her imprisonment. Edie who got a lot of suitors in her youth never married, because (again according to "Little" Edie) her mother never liked one, and she lost all her hair when she got a nervous breakdown when forced to move back to the Grey Gardens. After that day, she extend her unique style to colorful turbans that she always wore.

To tell you shortly, this socialite mother and daughter who lives in a dumpster-mansion are just the perfect characters in every director's dream. They constantly fight, especially about "Little" Edie's forced return home, and about (from what we can read between the lines) her mother's love affair started when she was still married. Another major issue between them is the fact that "Big" Edie always refused to sell the mansion which could cost plenty at its time. The film doesn't use external source of information, we only learn they life story from themselves, very subjectively I need to add, a completely different two version of the same story. It is left to you whose story to believe and whose not...

The only important part of the film isn't these two half-crazy women. Maysles 'Direct Cinema' technique, is a new beginning in documentary film-making  and they considered to be one of the pioneer's of the style. To tell you shortly about it, 'Direct Cinema' is the documentary version of 'Cinema Verité' and its  Soviet predecessor 'Kino Pravda' of DzigaVertov. With light and portable cameras in the 60's, certain film-makers aimed to create a new kind of realism, without the interference of the director to the characters. But for me, Maysles' mission surpasses this reality. Maysles never pretend that there is no camera around and the viewer is watching the pure reality itself. In almost the beginning of all of their films, they showed themselves. This is, for me, a critic of the illusion that Hollywood tries to create to forget the viewers about the camera and the crew.

Talking about the reality, especially in Grey Gardens, we cannot help to think about how everybody changes in front of a camera. Both "Little" and "Big" Edie are very colorful characters who like to play, especially to the camera, but also ordinarily to everybody. They call themselves "artists". They always play to the camera, so we see their true selves very rarely, but a few scenes (especially during their epic fights) when they lost their masks made the film legendary. In these moments, we see the Bouviers in all their nakedness, even better that we can see the people we think we know the most. An important part here, is that after the scandal of their living conditions were published in newspapers, they really had nothing to loose left. The fact that one of the most socialite families who is related to the American president lives in a dumpster made the little love affairs they lived before very insignificant, so they say what they want to say without hesitating.

The only factor for they frankness is not the fact that they got disgraced by this scandal. Maysles stayed in the house infected by insects, and inhabited by cats and raccoons for two months without running water. This certainly creates a special bond between them. "Big" Edie states that with her implications on "Little" Edie's marrying of the brothers, and in the scenes where they sang together with the Maysles. Maysles Brothers doesn't really act like most of the 'Direct Cinema' directors, and doesn't avoid contacting the two Edies when the camera is on, the important point here is not if the director talks with the characters or not, but not to manipulate them in some way.

The women trust the brothers so much, that when "Big" Edie's swimsuit (she wears a swimsuit inside for some strange reason) got loose in a fight scene, they continued the fight without a break. This is the scene I love the most in the history of cinema. Of course, not because a 80 year-old's breasts got exposed. I think Albert Maysles got the camera, when the swimsuit fell, he suddenly shifted the camera away, looking for a second for a place to focus (unfortunately he had the mirror across him which also shows her naked bosom) then zooms in to one of "Little" Edie's old photos. Just like how you'd turn your head if the same thing happened to you. The fact that Albert Maysles uses the camera like his own eyes and that he has reflexes like that amazes me.

All in all, Grey Gardens is the documentary that explores its characters the most that I saw. In addition to that, some scenes in which the "Little" Edie's words conjuncts with the shots around the house and the garden are pretty poetic. In short, you should watch this story of a decaying socialite family and the unique cinematographic sense of Maysles Brothers.

If you want more of it, you can also watch HBO's 'Grey Gardens' shot in 2009. The film in which Drew Barrymore plays "Little" Edie and Jessica Lange plays "Big" Edie also tells the making of the original Grey Gardens, the documentary. If you watch it, you'll understand more about me saying how important Maysles Brothers' stay in the house is. But, please do not automatically jump to the HBO film and don't forget that even though Drew Barrymore got the Golden Globe for her performance as Edie, nothing beats the truth! And, even though the film is very good, it doesn't have the gothic atmosphere of the documentary.
